The City of Cambridge has passed a city-wide ordinance to encourage customers of retail and food service establishments to bring their own reusable bags for shopping throughout the city. The ordinance goes into effect March 31, 2016. The new rules affect ALL businesses. (Only businesses who have an excessive back-stock of non-compliant bags will be eligible for an exemption.)
Information about the ordinance is at the city’s website here: CambridgeMA.gov/BYOB
So what does this mean at The Just Crust?
We already use compliant bags – we don’t offer plastic bags (completely banned under the new rules) and our take-out bags are 100% recyclable paper and at least 40% post-consumer recycled content, meeting the thresholds for compliance under the new ordinance. After March 31, we will be using non-handled bags, which are technically not subject to the ordinance, but we intend to continue to do our part to minimize their usage and encourage our customers to bring their own reusable bags. We will not be charging for these bags, as they are not the handled bags covered by the ordinance.
We currently do our best to discourage excessive use of take-out bags. For instance, if you order a salad or sandwich to go, we won’t give you a bag unless you specifically request one. When delivering large orders, we rarely use bags unless the customer requests flatware and napkins (which we only provide on request). We will be transporting large orders using reusable bags.
After March 31, if you are placing a take-out order over the phone, we will ask you if you can bring your own bags to pick up your order, in the spirit of the ordinance. We appreciate your understanding. If you have any questions, please send them to us at email@example.com
